Dear Brethren this page will be used as a memorial to those Brethren from Lodge Whifflet St John 963 who have sadly passed away to the Grand Lodge above. It is also a celebration of their lives and to acknowledge the work they did for the Lodge and local community, along with the chance for the Lodge to pay our farewell respects to those who we have grown to love over the years.

It is with deep sadness that I announce the sad passing to the Grand Lodge above of Bro. Bill Cleland, who sadly passed away on 30 Nov 2022 after a recent illness.


Bill has been away from the Lodge for a period of time however he will always be remembered by the Brethren of the Lodge.

Bro. Sam Hendry 963


It is with great sadness that I announce the passing to the Grand Lodge above of Bro. Sam Hendry who sadly passed away on 9 August 2022, another Brother taken from us and again it saddens us all.


The RWM and Brethren of the Lodge extend their deepest sympathy and sincere condolences to the family and friends of Bro. Sam.


The Lodge was well represented by members including the RWM, PM’s and Brn as well as Brn from sister Lodges who attended the funeral service Holytown crematorium.

Bro. John Moran 963


It is with great sadness that I announce the passing to the Grand Lodge above of Bro. John Moran who sadly passed away recently, another Brother taken from us and again it saddens us all.

Bro. Jim Blair PM  963

It is with deep sadness that I announce the sad passing to the Grand Lodge above of Bro. Jim Blair PM 963, who sadly passed away on 29 Nov 2021 after a recent illness.


Bro. Jim was an active member of the Lodge both in office and at our regular social activities, a great golfer he was also a member of Drumpellier Golf club.


The Lodge was well represented by members including the RWM, IPM, PM’s and Brn as well as Brn from sister Lodges who attended the funeral service Chryston Parish Church and thereafter at Daldowie crematorium.


Once again we have a lost a true gentleman and a brother to the Grand Lodge above, I am sure you are at peace Jim you will forever be in our thoughts.

Bro. Hughie Glenn PM  963

It is with deep sadness that I announce the sad passing to the Grand Lodge above of Bro. Hughie Glenn PM 963, who sadly passed away on 11 Dec 2019 after a recent illness.


Bro. Hughie was an active member of the Lodge both in office and at our regular social activities, a great bowler he was also a member of Whifflet and Victoria bowling clubs and served as president in both. 


Hughie also took part in Lodge bowling and took great pride in helping out at various Lodge bowling events including the King Stewart, the Inter Lodge competitions and the Lodge Whifflet v Lodge Services annual get together.


The Lodge was well represented by members including the RWM, IPM, PM’s and Brn as well as Brn from sister Lodges who attended the funeral service at Daldowie crematorium.


Again another good man taken to the Grand Lodge above, I am sure you are at peace Hughie you will forever be in our thoughts.

Bro. William Crawford Matear  963

It is with great sadness that I announce the sad passing to the Grand Lodge above of Bro. William Crawford Matear, who sadly passed away at the beginning of March 2018. 


Bro. William was aged 91 on passing and resided in the Sutton Coldfield area of England in his latter years, his son David currently resides in Canada and is a member of Lodge Kamloops No. 10, British Columbia.


Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this sad time.

Bro. Bill Cullen PM 963

It is with great sadness that I announce the sad passing to the Grand Lodge above of Bro. Bill Cullen, who sadly passed away on 10 Jan 2017.


Bro Bill was another stalwart of our esteemed lodge and committed so much time and energy throughout the years, a stonemason to trade Bill was heavily involved in the construction of the new lounge at our old premises in Newland Street.


A first class degree worker Bill took pride in mentoring our office bearers at Lodge Instruction classes and both his discipline and humour will be sadly missed by those he helped over the years. Bro. Bill was also our Provincial Grand Lodge representative where he held Provincial Grand Junior Deacon, another responsibility which he took very seriously and conducted his duties with candor and respect.


A very hard working Freemason who was also active in a variety of Mason Orders and from all of us he will indeed be sadly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this sad time.

Bro. Jimmy Cunningham 963

It is with deep sadness that I announce the sad passing to the Grand Lodge above of Bro. Jimmy Cunningham, who sadly passed away on 05 April 2016.

 

Bro. Jimmy was an active member within the Lodge as well getting out and about visiting, he was stalwart in years gone by with his support to the lodge in Newlands St and also a regular at lodge social activities, a keen bowler he was also a member of the local bowling club. Our thoughts are with Georgie and the family at this sad time.

Bro. Robert Blades 963

It is with deep sadness that I announce the sad passing to the Grand Lodge above of Bro. Robert Blades, who sadly passed away on 12 Nov 2015 after a recent illness.


Robert had been away for the Lodge for a period of time however got back in touch through the website, I met him on a number of occasions and sat with him during our regular meetings. It was good to see him enjoying his freemasonry again and he often told me how he missed it over the years he was away, always noticed a glow in hos face when I met him.


Again another good man taken to the Grand Lodge above, I am sure you are at peace Robert, always in our thoughts.

Bro. Jim McLatchie 963

It is with deep sadness that I announce the sad passing to the Grand Lodge above of Bro. Jimmy McLatchie, who sadly passed away on 29 Jan 2015 after a recent illness.

 

Bro. Jimmy was an active member of the Lodge both in office and at our regular social activities, a champion bowler he was also a member of Victoria bowling club. In recent years he was active as Sword Bearer and more recently as Substitute Master.

 

Jimmy was also the Lodge bowling representative and took great pride in organising the various Lodge bowling events including the King Stewart, the Inter Lodge competitions and the Lodge Whifflet v Lodge Services annual get together, through these events Jimmy helped raise vast sums of money for local charities.


The Lodge was well represented by members including the RWM, IPM, PM’s and Brn who attended the funeral service at McLaren's then over to Holytown crematorium.

  

The RWM, PM's and Brethren of the Lodge extend their deepest sympathy and sincere condolences to Nan, Ian and family.


Bro. Jimmy will be sadly missed by Brethren and friends alike and our thoughts and prayers are with Nan, Ian and family throughout this sad time.

Bro. Jim Gillespie PM 963

It is with great sadness that I announce the death of Bro. Jim Gillespie PM 963 who sadly passed away recently, a keen bowler who played regularly and was well thought of by both his bowling and Masonic friends.

 

Jim joined the Lodge in April 1982 and was raised in October of that year; he passed through the Lodge offices and was installed into the chair in Dec 1987. Over the years Jim was very active in many ways within the Lodge and played an important part both in the working side and the social aspect as well. He was an integral part and was noted for his building skills and was the main driving force behind the reroofing of the old Temple.

 

The Lodge was well represented by members including the RWM, IPM, PM’s and Brn who attended the funeral service at Kirkton Church Carluke.

  

The RWM and Brethren of the Lodge extend their deepest sympathy and sincere condolences to the family and friends of Bro. Jim.

Bro. Robert Fingland 963

It is with deep sadness that I have to inform you of the passing to the Grand Lodge above of Bro. Robert Fingland, who sadly passed away on 04 April 2011. Robert passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving wife Christine and the family.

Bro. Robert was an active member of the Lodge both in office and at our regular social activities, a keen bowler he was also a member of Victoria bowling club. It goes without saying that Robert will be sadly missed by all at the Lodge and in our social circle, our thoughts and prayers are with Christine and the family at this sad time.

Bro. Hugh Rankin PM 963

It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the sad passing to the Grand Lodge above of Worthy Past Master Bro. Hugh Rankin, who sadly died on Saturday 09 March 2013.

Over the years Hugh was a stalwart within the Lodge both in Newlands Street and latterly Wood Street and was a great attendee giving loyal and dedicated service throughout the years, often offering advice and sharing his wisdom at our meetings. PM Hugh will be sadly missed from our lives and the lodge and we trust he is at peace with The Great Architect above.

An excellent turnout was witnessed at the funeral of Hugh on 18 Mar 2013, where a solemn service was held at Calder Church and thereafter at Daldowie Crematorium, a true testament to how well loved our dear friend and Brother Hugh is and always will be.

Our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences are conveyed to his dearest family from all at 963, you are in our thoughts and prayers  at this sad time.

Bro. George Walker  963

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing to Grand Lodge above of Bro George Walker who sadly passed away on New Years eve. The Lodge was informed of the passing by William his son. George was a Life Member of 963 and although not a regular attender of late, his passing brings great sadness to us all.  George was a Joiner to trade and joined the Lodge on the 13th January 1970. George had a serious illness over the last two years and sadly leaves behind his wife Isobel and son William, who are in our thoughts and prayers at this sad time.

Bro Alex Ewart 963

It is with deep sadness that I have to inform you of the passing to the Grand Lodge above of Bro. Alex Ewart, who sadly passed away on 28 Dec 2010. Alex joined the Lodge in March 1976 and was an great attendee throughout the years, often sitting with Jimmy Cunningham and friends  enjoying the fellowship offered at our meetings. Alex was also and keen bowler both at the indoor and at Whifflet Park where he won many a trophy and medal for his endeavours. He will be sadly missed from our meetings and we trust he is at peace with The Great Architect above.

An excellent turnout was witnessed at  funeral of Alex on 7 Jan 2011, where a solemn service was held at McLarens funeral parlour Coatbridge then at Daldowie Crematorium, a true testament to how well loved our dear friend Alex is and always will be.

Bro George Dorrian PM 963

It greatly saddens me to belatedly report the passing to the Grand Lodge above of Br George Dorrian PM. I have been ably informed by Bro. J Faye PM that Bro George sadly passed away at the end of April 2010, it is thought George was the oldest living Past Master prior to his death.

Bro. Wullie Walker PM 963

It is with great sadness that I announce the death of Bro. Wullie Walker  PM 963 who passed away recently, Wullie was a very well liked individual and well thought of by his Masonic friends. The funeral service took place on Thurs 04 March 2010 at McLarens funeral house Coatbridge and thereafter at Daldowie crematorium.

The numbers in attendance proved how well respected he was and it was a great sentiment to Wullie's memory and a fitting tribute was paid at the service.

PM Bro. Wullie Walker will be sadly missed by Brethren and friends alike and our thoughts and prayers are with his family throughout this sad time.

Bro. Arthur Jamieson PM 963

 

It is with great sadness that I announce the death of Bro. Arthur Jamieson PM 963 who passed away recently, unfortunately this is all the details I have at present. Arthur was another stalwart in the Lodge as well as being Past Substitute PGM, he was also a 33° Mason, whose commitment to Freemasonry was second to none.

Arthur will be sadly missed and our thoughts and prayers are with the family throughout this time.

Bro. Bill Coventry PM 963

8th June 2009 

It is with great sadness that I announce the death of Bro. Bill Coventry PM 963, who passed away peacefully at Monklands Hospital Airdrie, on 8th June 2009. Bill was an ever present member and Past Master of the Lodge who despite his 79 years was always a willing contributor to lodge business, a jovial and cheerful character who will be dearly missed by Lodge members.

A loving husband of Bessie, much loved father to Olive and William, step-father to John and Caroline and grandfather of the family. Bill will be sadly missed and our thoughts and prayers are with the family throughout this time.
